The elections are around the corner and the campaigns are getting very heated. Things that were not previously privy to the public domain are now being made known as politicians now look to do everything necessary to win public trust and indeed the votes of those eligible to vote during the polls.
Though some of the allegations may not necessarily be true, the aim generally is to throw enough dirt on the other side and hope they will remain stained all through the electioneering period.
This was the case with when the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Tinubu, stated during a campaign rally that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki was stealing from his people for his own personal gain.
Tinubu stated that Saraki (who is currently the right-hand man of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar) was not to be trusted and that he had betrayed everyone who had been close to him it serves his personal interest.
The APC national leaders, who spoke when the party’s campaign train landed in Ilorin, Kwara State, insists that the party was prepared to liberate the people of the state from the grip of the Saraki family.
“He is a traitor… someone who takes his people’s belongings and sells them off. He is self-centred. Bukola Saraki is the one I’m talking about. He can’t beat you, or will he?
“I know, this is the celebration of your freedom; this is the celebration of the falling of the Berlin wall. This is the celebration of the end to oligarchy,” Tinubu said.
Still on election matters, an analyst and research fellow at the University of Lagos, Olurunleke Michael, stated that President Buhari will likely lose the election which is expected to be close to the PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar, he based his opinion on the performance of the president since he assumed office which he stated had been poor.
Olurunleke stated that much of the goodwill that saw Buhari defeat then President Goodluck Jonathan has evaporated over the years insisting that Nigerians are frustrated by Buhari’s performance.
Olurunleke said: “Whatever you say; he is the incumbent and has his stronghold, it would be a close presidential election; Buhari has large support in some parts of northern Nigeria. But Nigerians should brace up for a shock of their lives, it would happen, what happened to Goodluck Jonathan may happen again.
“Buhari may lose, but I think it may be largely due to his mental and physical incompetence to the office, his weaknesses have also been exposed in the recent media chat.
“It is obvious that Buhari cannot continue in such office; electing him for the second term would mean sharing power with some people which is illegal.
“And it is sad those pushing him are only concerned about their interest; they are not concerned about Nigeria.
“In terms of mental and physical competence, Atiku is better than him; you can see his acceptance across the country, I see him winning the election.”
Corroborating Olorunleke’s views, a Political Economist from the University of Ilorin, Emmanuel Adebisi, stated that from information available to him, he expects a tight race but stressed that Atiku will eventually win due to the fact that the Buhari administration had performed poorly.
“If you look at all indices in the country, I think the country has not made much progress under this APC government; look at the naira, doing business, power, Nigerians should get something better than this.
“For the election, Buhari has his stronghold and they have incumbency power, but you see, he is not the one in charge of this government, even his wife said it.
“Atiku is better and from my findings so far, he has a clear understanding of the economy and related issues, I see him winning the election,” Adebisi said.
